Bree Morris and Ava Wright-Martin

Enhancing the university experience

University should be about more than just earning a degree – it’s also a chance to develop a broader perspective, learning to navigate the world with empathy and confidence.

Often forgotten in today’s busy and, let’s be honest, sometimes superficial society, is the fact that a well-rounded education encourages students to think critically, engage with ethical and social issues, and gain a deeper understanding of the communities around them.

This is a key part of the learning experience for Bree Moris and Ava Wright-Martin at Australian Catholic University (ACU) through their unique Core Curriculum. Designed to challenge students to see the world from new perspectives, the program fosters meaningful discussions and transformative learning experiences.

And while the Core Curriculum is offered at all ACU campuses, combing this program with an overseas experience can make the learning even more impactful.

Bree and Ava, Brisbane-based occupational therapy students, recently returned from two weeks in Rome, buzzing with excitement about their experiences.

Finding meaning

For Ava the most meaningful part of the journey was the opportunity to help others.

“My most inspiring moment was during a community engagement project at Città Ecosolidale, a remarkable foundation dedicated to fighting poverty in Rome,” she said.

“As core students we volunteered to organise clothes for vulnerable individuals alongside the team at Città Ecosolidale. This experience highlighted the ongoing crisis of inequality faced by marginalised groups and inspired me, as an aspiring occupational therapist, to advocate for and support vulnerable individuals.

For Bree it was a chance create connections and push herself.

“It was a great opportunity to meet new people, build independence, self-reliance and even network for my future career,” she said. “We met some amazing people from right across the globe, from Poland to America.”

Enriched learning

Being in the heart of Rome also brought their studies of justice and global change to life.

Ava described the journey as an eye-opening experience, giving her the chance to learn about different cultures while exploring the beauty of the city.

“The program strikes a great balance between learning in the classroom and discovering Rome’s rich history,” she said. “The excursions, like visiting churches, attending guest lectures, and exploring organisations like the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development really helped me see how what we learn in class connects to the real world. It’s one thing to learn about these issues but seeing them in action made everything feel more meaningful and relevant.”

Soaking up the sights

Ava and Bree agreed that exploring the city and soaking up the atmosphere, history and food were highlights of their international experience.

“One standout moment from the trip was ‘Rome by night’, where our group explored the city’s vibrant nightlife while discovering the history behind some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks,” Ava said.

Walking through the illuminated streets, they visited breathtaking sites like the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps.

“The night ended on a sweet note with delicious local treats – my favourite being limoncello and chocolate gelato,” said Ava. “This unforgettable experience not only deepened my appreciation for Roman culture but also brought our group closer together, making it one of the most memorable highlights of the trip.”

“There is a lot of history around every corner and it’s wonderful to see it still standing – buildings, apartments and monuments,” added Bree. “The Italians really cherish their history.”

Take the leap

Their advice to those thinking about an overseas study experience?

“Dive in headfirst – it's truly the best experience, and you'll regret it if you don't,” Bree said. “The hardest part about studying overseas is taking that first leap of faith. Just apply, commit yourself and show up. There is financial assistance available through ACU, so don't let that hold you back from an unforgettable journey. You'll gain lifelong memories, new friendships and a fresh perspective on the world – an experience you'll carry with you forever."

“I would say ‘do it’,” agreed Ava. “Studying overseas has been the most incredible opportunity. I've made so many amazing friends from other ACU campuses – bonding over trivia night games, sharing delicious pizza at new restaurants and exploring the stunning sights of Rome. I've created lifelong memories with the most incredible group – memories we will treasure forever.”

The experience has also enriched Ava’s preparation for her future career as an occupational therapist – and it holds value for many other professions, too.

“Working in healthcare means engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures,” she said. “This study abroad opportunity has strengthened my cultural awareness and highlighted the importance of kindness, compassion and advocacy at the heart of my future practice as an allied health practitioner."
