Should I go to university? A guide for those not fresh out of high school

“How do I get a promotion?” “How do I change careers?” “How do I get a new job?”

Returning to university, or going for the first time, is a big decision – especially when you’re juggling the responsibilities of adult life.

However, it can offer rewards for years to come. Whether looking to advance your career, change jobs or simply pursue a passion, going back to study can be a transformative experience.

Advance your career and develop new skills

In today’s fast-evolving job market, staying competitive often requires upskilling or gaining new qualifications. For many professions, formal qualifications are essential before you’ll have any chance to enter the field: for example, nursing, midwifery or teaching.

But uni offers more than a qualification. Returning to university means you can learn the latest industry trends, technologies and practices. An undergraduate course (such as a diploma or bachelor’s degree) or postgraduate qualification (like a graduate certificate or master’s degree) can also make you more marketable to employers and competitive in crowded job markets.

At ACU, we understand the importance of industry-based learning and practical experience. Our degrees go beyond the theory to equip you with the skills for a new industry, opening doors to new professional opportunities.

Personal growth and ongoing learning

An often-underestimated outcome of studying at university is a deeper sense of fulfilment. Whether it’s finally pursuing a passion that was put on hold or exploring a new area of interest, ACU offers opportunities to achieve positive personal growth – in the social, professional, philosophical or spiritual realms.

At ACU, we believe in the transformational power of education. We have a huge range of student services and opportunities to support you as you challenge yourself, engage with fresh ideas, meet new people, go new places and try new things.

Networking and professional connections

Returning to study can help you build a new network of professional contacts. These connections can be invaluable for future job opportunities.

At ACU you’ll access a diverse community of peers, academics and community engagement experiences. We focus on developing job-ready skills. If you study nursing, you’ll go on placements in hospitals. If you study teaching, you’ll go to schools and build connections while getting an insight into life in front of the classroom. Our business degrees focus on work-integrated learning and are co-created with industry to ensure job-ready skills.

Flexible study options for busy lives

Universities offer a range of flexible study options designed to suit the busy lives of adults. Depending on what course you wish to pursue, you’ll likely have part-time, online or mixed-mode options to help balance your studies with work, family and other commitments. This flexibility means you can pursue your education at a pace that works for you.

At ACU, we understand going to university as a mature age student or non-recent school leaver student a big decision. However, it can also be a great investment in your future – whether for career advancement, personal growth or a love of learning.

If you’re ready to take the next step, we’re here to support you to achieve your goals. Explore our range of courses.
